Lesley Anderson is an artist based in Austin, Texas. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, Canada and France. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Concordia University. Anderson has been recognized with awards and residencies including the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and the Tom Hopkins Graduate Award in Painting. Her work is held in the Aritzia Corporate Collection, the Nordstrom Corporate Collection, and the Gordon and Marion Smith Collection. Her work has been featured in Austin Home, Style at Home, and SAD Mag.
Artist Statement
Lesley Anderson’s paintings embrace minimal and gestural languages. Rooted in observation of the natural world, the paintings move through a process of reduction, where recognizable forms are distilled into gesture, shape, and light. Drawn to the resilience of native flora, she begins with translucent acrylic washes, creating an atmospheric quality to the ground before successive layers of colour and form are added. Her airy palette is characterized by subtle shifts in value, punctuated by velvety darks. Lavender grays and silvery agave, balanced by inky blues and shadowy mauves. Edges soften, allowing botanical forms to recede and re-emerge with shifting clarity, as though remembered rather than recorded. The resulting paintings occupy a space between representation and reduction, where familiar forms are distilled to their essentials, inviting a slower way of seeing the natural world.
